Never Knew
Ryan M Barnes
As she walked through the door the music stopped
And all eyes in the room followed mine
Then the music began as I played once again
But my heart wasn’t in it this time
In the briefest of moments
in the space of a breath
I felt a longing that I’ve never known
As I saw her walk in
amidst the crowd and the din
My heart was no longer my own
She ordered a drink and sat down alone
She watched as I played my guitar
I began to play soft—I began to play weak
And the strength flowed away from my knees
She smiled as she caught me staring
I lost my place in the song in her eyes
I hit the wrong chord again and again
But it didn’t matter this time
In the briefest of moments iIn the space of a breath
I felt a longing that I’ve never known
As I saw her walk in amidst the crowd and the din
My heart was no longer my own
When he sat down beside her and offered a drink
Her smile—it turned into rage
She pushed him away and walked out the door
And I never got her name
I wake up at night once again at that night
Her face is haunting my dreams
I’ll never forget those soft dark brown eyes
That I remember as I sing
In the briefest of moments iIn the space of a breath
I felt a longing that I’ve never known
I see her walk in again and again
And my heart is no longer my own
